Piers vs mudjacking (slabjacking)
Piers support a foundation from deeper ground. Mudjacking lifts a sunken slab by pumping material under it. They solve different problems.
How they compare
| Piering | Mudjacking or slabjacking | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Transfers the load to deeper, firmer ground and can lift the foundation | Fills voids and raises a sunken slab from underneath |
| Often used for | House foundations that have settled or moved | Driveways, patios, walkways, garage floors and some interior slabs |
| Typical national range | About $1,000 to $3,000 per pier | $500 to $1,300 |
Ranges are national typical ranges from the published guide cited on our cost page. They are not Texas figures and not quotes.
Foam leveling
Some companies use polyurethane foam instead of a cement slurry to lift concrete. Ask what material they use and why. See concrete leveling for driveways, patios and garage floors.
Why a lower price is not the whole story
Mudjacking a house slab that is still moving may not address the cause. Piering a sunken sidewalk is usually more than the job needs. Have a qualified pro inspect it and tell you in writing which method they recommend and why.

Common questions
Is mudjacking the same as slabjacking?
Yes, the two names are used for the same idea: pumping material under a sunken slab to raise it.
Can mudjacking fix a house foundation?
It is mostly used for flatwork like driveways and patios. For a house that has settled or moved, companies more often recommend piers. An inspection tells you which fits.
